"Tinea" refers to a skin infection with a dermatophyte (ringworm) fungus.

Depending on which part of the body is affected, it is given a specific name.

Sometimes, the name gives a different meaning.

  • Tinea versicolor, also more accurately called Pityriasis versicolor, a common yeast infection on the trunk
  • Tinea incognito when the clinical appearance has changed because of inappropriate treatment
  • Tinea nigra affects the palms or soles which appear brown (on white skin) or black (on dark skin)

DermNet does not provide an on-line consultation service.
If you have any concerns with your skin or its treatment, see a dermatologist for advice.

Wth is this? a fungus? mild psoryasis?

It seems like I almost have athlete's foot on my hand. It only on one hand..and it kind of moves around after awhile from one spot to another. It gets red and kills a layer of skin in small places, sometimes with really tiny bubbles underneath the surface of the skin. I've spent a lot of time researching it and couldn't find any pictures that match. I can't tell if it's a fungus or mild psoryasis. I've tried lotion, OTC fungal cream, scouring the dead skin off, vaseline (to seal out moisture,) the sun, and frequent washing. All of those helped to some extent..but nothing has killed it altogether

I have a rash or fungus of some type that only appears in these areas. I didn't develop this until after the tanning bed. I have a friend who had it that is black though and he told me to use head and shoulders. This wor … as visible. If I could just gets some possible diagnosis I will research myself. Thanks.
Is a yeast infection on those areas possible? EWWW
By the way I have had this for three years. Just worse some years.

    • I would go see your doctor or a skin doctor before you start putting stuff on it not knowing what it is. Unless a doctor answers your question, I'd wait until I saw one.
